About Paving Stones
What Are Paving Stones?
Paving stones have been used for over 2000 years. They were used in Ancient Rome to construct roads, which in some cases are still in use today! They have proven their longevity and this is what makes them such a popular building material. Paving stones are typically made from brick, stone or concrete. But there are also natural stone paving stones, such as those made from Cantera Stone, limestone, flagstone, bluestone and slate. They are impermeable blocks, and are commonly set in sand. Water is able to percolate downwards due to the joints being filled with sand. |
The distinguishing aspect of paving stones versus other types of pavement is that they are not joined together to make a totally solid surface, like concrete or asphalt. They are usually interlocking and hold together well and are durable and can withstand much traffic, wear and surface pressure, while remaining a bit flexible.
Thus, they are not prone to cracking and can be easily replaced if necessary. Paving stones are cleaved into various shapes and sizes, suitable for all kinds of applications and individual requirements. They can be laid in different designs and patterns, simulating flat tiled surfaces. |
